Cabernet Franc (in English and French: Cabernet Franc) is a red grape variety. The variety is common in Bordeaux-style masquerade wines where it is added to the main ingredients Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In addition, the variety is also used to make varietal wines - for example in the Loire Valley in France, and even to make ice wines in Canada and the United States.
Cabernet Franc, along with the white variety Sauvignon Blanc, are the genetic parents of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety.
Wines containing Cabernet Franc are often characterized by aromas of black pepper, and in some cases aromas of berries, tobacco and violets.
